What motivated you to travel on that first trip? Where did you decide to go and why did you choose that place out of all others? The first international solo trip that I ever took outside of North America was to Iceland in March, 2015 and travelled around the country by car. The motivation was to find solitude in the freezing cold and unrestrained nature of the country as that is something to be cherished as it gives me time alone with the vastness of the universe and its creator. True solitude can be found in many places including within meditation anywhere on the planet. That said, for my personal Iceland experience I wanted to be in a place shaped by the violence of volcanism, the crushing waves of the Atlantic Ocean, massive creeping and calving glaciers, and the fantastic power of the jokulhlaup. What obstacles and fears did you have to overcome to travel that first time? Whether this was just finding a house sitter, figuring out how to save up enough money, or becoming confident enough to travel on your own. I didn’t truly have any obstacles or fears in my way. I pre-planned my night’s accommodations and fit in whatever I wanted inbetween. The obstacles came during my trip whiched included lost luggage, a flat tire, and the death of my father which cut the trip short.

Who was the most fascinating person you met on the road? What made him/her fascinating and how did you meet him/her? I met an amazing and kind Chinese girl named Fay Haixuan Wang. She was just fun to talk with and had a great smile I met her in Egilsstaðir in a small guesthouse. What is your most treasured travel experience? Why is this one your favourite? My most treasured travel experience is anywhere that I can get away and be alone in the wild. As a trained professional geologist I relish time alone just viewing, listening, and breathing in the world around me. I love the natural world and I am inspired by it. For instance, standing alone on a black sandy beach in southern Iceland watching the powerful crashing waves meet the shoreline is a special place for a man like me. It is a sublime place where I can be anywhere in my memories, in deep time, in the now, or far off into the future. I love it! More excellent memories of Alaska, Idaho, California, and New Mexico also come to mind. If you could travel anywhere in the world where money wasn’t an issue, where would you be and what would you be doing? In essence, describe your idea of the perfect traveling experience. I would travel all throughout the Himalaya. Hiking and staying with locals where I would just wander as I know solitude would be easy to find there.
