Cycling Over Douglas Pass, CO
There isn't a shoulder at Douglas Pass Colorado despite what the 'Colorado Bicycling and Scenic Byways Map' may say. It used to be there, but it hasn't been upkept at all in the last few years and has either eroded away completely or been overrun with waist high plants. Nevertheless, Douglas Pass is a fantastic route to get from Grand Junction to Dinosaur National Park, especially since it's full of ancient drawings by the Fremont people within easy and close proximity of the road. This route is suitable for cars as it's paved all the way through. Just please give cyclists as much space as possible (it is legal to cross double lines for cyclists), especially around the many tight corners found on Douglass Pass.
Cycling in Browns Park Wildlife Refuge
There are two free campsites located at the far ends of the main road through Browns Park Wildlife Refuge. They both have fire rings and long drop toilets; however, the one at Swingingbridge does not have any picnic tables. If you're using these two beautful and free campsites, please camp responsibly (pack it in, pack it out; bury your poop; respect the wildlife; leave it better than you found it) so that others may continue to use these sites while they're cycling, hiking, or simply enjoying the wilderness of Browns Park Wildlife Refuge.
